DOC ISONZO PINOT GRIGIO 2011 GR.14
Chiude leggermente amaricante. Primi piatti con sughi di carne.
IGT VENEZIA GIULIA “PLAGNIS” 2008 GR.14
Di qualità fine, all’assaggio risulta intenso e persistente.

Tradition encounters innovation in the wines of Renzo Sgubin
nov 01
Some time ago Sandra and Marco, during an afternoon stroll-about, decided to reach the Collio area and knocked on the Sgubins’ door, just for a quick stop and – in case – a snack.
Michela and Renzo Sgubin, kind and hospitable as usual, called them in to the tasting room, located in 15 Via Faet, Cormons (GO). The wine-house is located between the DOC areas of Collio and Isonzo, and here Renzo Sgubin settles with his family, coming from his parental house built on the slopes of Monte Quarin, and where he lived in his teens among the fragrances of the vineyards. In 1999 he decided to restructure the cellar and modernize the wine-making equipment. In the course of time Renzo gained a perfect balance in making wines capable to express what the rich soil of Pradis and the gravelly lands close to the Isonzo river tell, the hard work, the fascination and the resolution requested for a premium production that combines tradition with innovation.
Here following are the reports drawn by Sandra and Marco during the tasting session:
DOC ISONZO FRIULANO 2011 – 14°
Straw yellow with golden tinges is the color. If you rotate the glass, the wine will draw around it a fine pattern of tears which reveal the consistency. The nose feels complex and intense sensations: the well marked minerality goes along with pronounced flowers and fruits, such as hawthorn, Golden apple, white melon. The typical almond taste lasts for quite a long time as aftertaste. Performs a considerable structure, intense and balanced in the mouth. Fresh and tasty, when the tasting session is carried out, seems almost ready, however it will certainly behave even better after few months of maturation in the bottle. Highly suitable as aperitif, but quite eclectic too in pairings: for example a good local raw ham, first courses with vegetables or fish bases, or also seafood. We propose this wine to match a risotto with shellfish.
DOC ISONZO PINOT GRIGIO 2011 – 14°
Straw yellow with copper tinges, a good consistency. This wine is rather complex. Flowery and fruity, we feel broom-shrub flowers, pears, melon, but also spices and green pepper. Tasty and quite fresh, good length. Matches a good sformato di zucchine, kind of a courgette flan.
DOC ISONZO CHARDONNAY 2011 – 14°
Straw yellow with golden shimmers, flowery and fruity, feelings of tropical fruits such as bananas and mangoes in a balsamic vegetal context and wild herbs too: thyme and Pennyroyal mint. Intense and persistent, goes with seashell appetizers.
DOC ISONZO MALVASIA 2011 – 15°
Intense golden yellow, consistent in the glass, the nose perceives a good complexity and fineness. Begins with vegetal hints, herbs such as sage, rosemary and laurel, then flowery scents, broom-shrub flowers, and fruits such as pears and yellow peaches; a remarkable minerality expresses salty and iodine-like taste, almost a sea-breeze. Remarkably persistent ends with a kindly bitterish feeling. Matches very well a baked anchovy pie.
IGT VENEZIA GIULIA “3.4.3” 2010 – 13,5°
A cuvée of Friulano (40%), Chardonnay (40%), Sauvignon (10%) and Malvasia (10%), is refined in used barrels usually containing from 3 to 10 hectoliters. The color is an appreciable golden yellow, quite complex at the nose, the initial scents issued are vegetal and fruity such as tomato leaves and citrus fruits, some more evolved smells to follow: hay, the fragrance of the crust of bread, honey, vanilla, oriental spices…Balanced, intense and prolonged, a fair harmony of all the components; Renzo suggests to match it with seashells, however we would also try it with white meats, e.g. a baked deboned rabbit roll with vegetables.
DOC ISONZO SAUVIGNON 2011 – 14°
Straw yellow with golden shimmers; intense, fine, rather complex at the nose. Highlight on linden flowers and elderberry, then come some gentle vegetal hints of tomato leaves, citrus fruits and a good minerality. Impressive the delicate freshness; the mouth feels intense and quite prolonged sensations. DOC Isonzo Sauvignon 2011 is the result of a blend of two wines obtained from a double harvest: at first some grapes are gathered whilst still unripe, with the aim to enhance the fragrances, in a second stage the harvest involves the remaining grapes, now completely ripe, so gaining a sound structure. A good try is to pair it with a risotto with field herbs.
DOC COLLIO MERLOT 2009 – 14°
Refined for 12 months in barrels – the wood used is Slavonia and French oak – from 3 to 7 hectoliters large. Nice is the intense ruby red color, good consistency at a visual analysis; the nose then perceives remarkable scents of black cherry and withered rose buds, then graphite, tobacco and leather smells come out. A well bodied wine, warm though in perfect balance; its soft tannins confer velvety feelings to the mouth. The final seems kindly bitterish. Goes well with first courses seasoned with meat sauces.
IGT VENEZIA GIULIA “PLAGNIS” 2008 – 14°
A blend of Merlot (40%), Refosco (40%), Franconia (20%), refined for 24 months in oak barrels. The color is a crystal-clear ruby red, quite consistent when poured; the olfactory analysis reveals intense and complex fragrances of small red fruits, mulberry, blackcurrant, then it displays some vanilla, cocoa, leather, tobacco and pepper. A fine quality product, the tasting indicates intensity and good length. Despite a slight overcome of the edgy features (freshness, tastyness, the tannins still a bit harsh) it is definitely in balance. These properties lead me to suggest a pairing with grilled beef.
Three generations are active at the Sgubins’ winehouse: Bruno, the father, Renzo and his two kids, already strolling through the vineyards…
