Waiting for the Anteprima 2012 of the “Nobile di Montepulciano”…16WaWa
Nobile di Montepulciano
di Giuditta Lagonigro.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano obtained the DOCG (denominazione di origine controllata e garantita, that means: controlled designation of origin guaranteed) in 1980. This wine has a very ancient origin. A citation is found in the “History of Rome” written by Tito Livio, almost 2000 years ago. From 1300 on it is mentioned by Popes, Poets, Writers. The specific name of Nobile for sure appears in 1829/1830 but it seems that a “noble” wine was known also about 1700.
The production area includes the municipality of Montepulciano, excluded the Valdichiana zone. The vineyards must be located between 250 and 600 meters A.M.S.L.; the maximum yield is 8 tons per hectare. Wine making and bottling are made only within the municipality of Montepulciano.
Features of the vine and of the wine
The Nobile di Montepulciano wine is obtained from Sangiovese grapes, the locals call them also Prugnolo Gentile, and it must enter in the blend of grapes for a minimum rate of 70%. The Production Standards consider also the use of Canaiolo Nero up to a maximum rate of 20%, and likewise up to 20% is the maximum rate admitted for vines authorized and/or recommended by the provincial authorities of Siena. The ageing foreseen for the Vino Nobile is a minimum of two years, to be counted starting from Jan. 1st following to the harvest time. It’s then up to the producers – within the terms stated by the Production Standards – the choice of refining operations and times, whether in wood, bottle or other container
The DOCG (controlled designation of origin guaranteed) Vino Nobile Nobile di Montepulciano (alcohol content 12,50%), is allowed to the market only after two years – times are binding – of aging, starting from Jan. 1st of the year following the harvest. The DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva (alcohol content 13,00%), is allowed to the market only after an aging that lasts three years, six month out which must be done in bottle.
So much for technical info. Now let’s explore the emotional and the sensorial aspects, certainly more interesting, coming from the organoleptic analysis of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
The 2006 vintage, presented at the Anteprima event, despite the weather’s unpredictable whims, performs very generous features. The grapes achieved a premium quality, therefore the wines express tannins – not too aggressive – a good acidity and a sound structure – coming from a superior alcoholic grade – all in remarkable balance.
The tastings have proved to be very interesting because each and every wine always brings an important familiar background. It’s surprising to observe how a bottle of wine contains also an intergenerational transfer which maintains the traditional methods that come with an innovative point of view of wine-making. The initial approach to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is not too easy. Ruby red, some garnet shades gained during the aging. The fragrances, which we begin to learn and distinguish, can be fruity (small red fruits, such as Cranberry, Black Cherry, Blackberry), along with flowery hints (violets, roses…) or also some spicy nuances. The wood of the cask displays its presence with hints of vanilla and some toasted feeling: this latter grants smoothness and elegance, provided it’s not too strong. The wine is dry in the mouth, certainly powerful, but at the same time warm and rather persistent. A perfect pairing with the typical local products : finocchiona, salamini, salsiccia, pecorino, pici al ragù, fegatelli, game and the mythical “fiorentina“, will glorify all the features of this mighty wine, sometimes a bit edgy, but of course deserving an enthusiastic passion.
( A few tips: finocchiona is a pork salami spiced with fennel seeds and red wine; salamini are small salamis, quite dried and often made with a blend of pork and wild boar meats; salsiccia is sausage trimmed not too thin, kept rather soft , usually much fat is used, only pork meat; pecorino is a goat cheese, ofter seasoned; Pici are strictly hand-made spaghetti, not too long and with an irregular shape, going with ragout meat sauce; fegatelli: small pieces of pork liver , spiced with laurel and stewed slowly in an earthenware pot; the fiorentina, a real legend, a thick T-bone steak cut from the short loin of the Chianina breed, possibly grilled on charcoals). The lovely town of Montepulciano , blessed by Arts and History, is absolutely due a visit. During the winter season, but most of all in Summer, many cultural events take place. From the end of July and the beginning of August you can attend to the famous “Bravìo” a medieval contest with a barrels run, plunge into the magical world of music and soar through the enchanting ambiences of the “Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte”, an international arts workshop.
